Optofluidic Transport on SU-8 Ring Resonators at Telecom Frequencies

An inherent weakness of waveguide based optofluidic trapping [1] is that only a small fraction of the total power is used in trapping and transporting particles. In the best case scenario, 25% power is lost in coupling into the waveguide, and of the remaining energy, only 10-15% is present in the evanescent field. Ultimately, only 7-12% of the input power is actually used for trapping. Here we demonstrate the use of resonant devices for optofluidic trapping. By using optical ring resonators, we can increase the power available for optofluidic transport, allowing for more efficient use of energy.
